spot of island hopping.
10. Trieste, Italy & Aquileia, Italy
We arrive back in Trieste giving you the
opportunity to travel a little further afield or
return to a favourite place. The city’s historic
landmarks include the Church of San Giusto
and the surrounding medieval complex,
the Miramare Castle, and the Habsburgian
atmosphere of Piazza Italia. An hour’s bus ride
from Trieste is the elegant and fascinating
town of Aquileia, known among other things
for its mosaics. In Postumia meanwhile you’ll
get to visit the caves, famous for the tunnels
and chambers that have been carved into the
rock over a distance of over 20km. No need to
rush back to the ship today as the ship docks
overnight so you can take an evening stroll
along the seafront or watch the world go by
from one of the pavement cafes as the sun
goes down.
11. Ljubljana, Slovenia & Salzburg, Austria
& Bavaria, Germany
After disembarking this morning we drive
the short distance to the Slovenia capital,
Ljubljana. This picturesque and very vibrant
city is full of surprises. Ljubljana has preserved
evidence of a five thousand year history
including, among others, the remains of the
Roman city of Emona and the old city centre
with its medieval castle, Baroque façades,
decorative portals and uneven roofs. Other
significant attractions include picturesque
bridges across the Ljubljanica river and the
vast Tivoli park, which stretches into the very
city centre. We then travel on to Salzburg,
the setting for the film The Sound of Music. It
was also the birthplace of Mozart. Salzburg’s
“Old Town” is internationally renowned for its
baroque architecture and is one of the best-
preserved city centres north of the Alps. It was
listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
The Dom in all its Baroque glory was opened
in 1628 and has proved to be Salzburg’s top
attraction ever since. We stay overnight in
Bavaria.
12. Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, Germany
& Limburg, Netherlands
Leaving our hotel after breakfast in the
morning we travel through Germany towards
Munich and then we head north following
the Romantic Road, Germany’s best known
and most popular tourist route. We visit
Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, a well preserved
medieval town. You can enjoy views of the
fortified town from the perfectly intact town
walls, complete with 42 gates and towers. Take
a stroll through the winding streets to see half-
timbered buildings, flower boxes, fountains
and lovingly restored house fronts. And no visit
to Rothenburg is complete without visiting the
Christmas Store, housing more than 30,000
Christmas decorations, a museum and an
exhibition. Our overnight hotel is in Limburg,
home to some of the oldest wooden buildings
in Germany.
13. United Kingdom
After crossing the German border into Belgium
we make our way towards Dunkirk and our late
afternoon crossing to Dover. We then start our
drops off as we make our way back up north
with the last disembarkations being late that
night.
Many visitors head to Corfu for sun, sea and sand
but there is more to this Greek island than might
first appear. Corfu Town is one of the largest living
medieval towns in Greece, with historic buildings,
statues, fountains and cobblestone streets and
alleyways. But it’s the Old Fortress which made it on
to the UNESCO World Heritage list. This Venetian-
built fortress sits on the promontory which originally
contained the old town of Corfu, which the Venetians
separated from the mainline with a moat. Have a drink
or lunch along the French-style Liston Esplanade. Or
you could simply head for the beach.
9. Dubrovnik, Croatia
Sailing into the port of the 12th century walled city
of Dubrovnik is one of the great cruise experiences.
The spectacular medieval city is crammed with
architectural wonders, such as Onofrio’s Fountain
and the Sponza Palace. The narrow side streets are
worth exploring as they hide many pretty cafes and
restaurants. Travel by cable car for a look from above at
the magnificent view of the Old City. If you prefer you
can travel a little further afield to Cavtat or maybe a
pecial
